A dreaded Garo National Liberation Army militant was killed and arms, ammunition, diaries and documents of the outfit was recovered on Tuesday night in a joint operation by the army, and Goalpara district police on the basis input provided by the army intelligence.

The incident has served a major blow to the leadership of the banned militant outfit based in Garo Hills of Meghalya.

A defence source in Guwahati informed that the killed militant was a hardcore, dreaded member of GNLA. This was also corroborated from the recovery of personal diaries from the possession of the slain militant in which his identity was revealed as Don William Marak alias Pangsang Ch Marak alias Fanfan alias Nikrek Ch Marak.

The recoveries include one 7.65mm US-made automatic pistol, two magazines, seven live rounds, two GNLA demand letters and other incriminating documents.

Security forces also suspected that there were other members of the GNLA who were moving in the area to carry out anti-national activities and trying to strengthen hold of the militant group in the Garo-dominated border villages.

It is suspected that the slain militant was from the second batch of armed cadres of the outfit who passed out of their training in 2011.
