One policeman was killed after terrorists fired indiscriminately at Sopore police station in north Kashmir on Tuesday morning.
The police and paramilitary, central reserve police forces have surrounded the area around the police station and massive searches have been launched.
"The militants fired at the police station resulting in critical injuries to a head constable of the counter intelligence wing of the state police who succumbed to his injuries in the hospital," a senior police officer said.
Head constable Mohammad Yousuf was entering the police station at 10.45 am when heavily armed ultras opened fire, the police said.
He said the policemen retaliated and exchange of fire between militants and the police was going on.
Meanwhile, normalcy returned to Srinagar and other towns of the valley after it remained paralysed for over a week. The valley witnessed violent protests following the death of two youths in the summer capital of Srinagar.
Over 120 people, including security men and protestors, were injured in the clashes.
