Terror outfit Lashkar-i-Jhangvi's Karachi chief arrested

In a major breakthrough, former police constable and chief of the Karachi chapter of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi was on Tuesday arrested by the Pakistani police in Karachi.

A senior police official of the Special Investigation Unit said Tariq Shafi alias 'Doctor' was arrested from Hub, which is 25 km from Karachi and near the Baluchistan province border.

"It is a big arrest as Shafi is wanted in several cases, he is a wanted militant," Farooq Awan told reporters.

He said Shafi was wanted in nearly 14 cases, including the recent target killing of Sibte Jafar, a college principal and literary figure.

The LeJ is known for its anti-Shia Muslim stance and activities.

"Shafi is involved in several cases of sectarian killings, in which some eight people were killed including the professor," he said.

A former head constable in the police telecommunication wing in 2001, Shafi was dismissed from his duties and arrested on charges of involvement in sectarian attacks. He was released in 2008.

In another incident, the Crime Investigation Department arrested an alleged Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan militant, Kamran alias Kami, from Korangi Industrial area.

According to CID, the suspect was robbing banks for the TTP.
