Janata Dal (United) Lok Sabha member Devendra Prasad Yadav on Tuesday said 'the unprovoked assault on him and his colleagues' by security men was symbolic of 'central forces who do not want to see Bihar progress'.
"Our state is suffering because of drought conditions and 100,000 people came to Delhi to demonstrate. This unprovoked and cowardly assault on peaceful demonstrators by the police cannot go unchallenged. If an MP like me is assaulted without provocation, you can imagine the plight of the common man," he said.
He was allegedly beaten with lathis and dragged by security men while demonstrating at Jantar Mantar.
According to Ramashish Yadav, JD(U) legislator from the Benipati assembly constituency in Bihar, the lathi charge was unprovoked.
The cops restrained themselves only when they saw former prime minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Deve Gowda coming to the aid of the demonstrators, he said.
The legislators demanded suspension of the guilty policemen and an apology from Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.
Advani said that he would verify what exactly transpired before he took any action, JD(U) activists said.
"The home minister better have a good explanation because after all Devendra Yadav is a part of this government and we will ensure that it will have hell to pay for if our leader does not get justice," the legislator said.
He contended that many women were injured in the attack and the issue would be raised in Parliament on Wednesday.
