Authorities have finally admitted the surfacing of the swine flu infection in the Kashmir valley.
A senior doctor at the Soura medical institute confirmed this after relevant tests were carried out at the state's only tertiary medical facility.
Dr Parvaiz Koul, head of department (medicine) at the Soura medical institute and in charge of the influenza project in the state, said that some of the patients were treated successfully while others are still under treatment.
Sources said that cases of swine flu were being reported from other hospitals in the city.
"There is nothing to worry about, as we have a proper testing laboratory where the tests are conducted within hours for the treatment to start,” Dr Koul said.
"People should observe infection control practices like hand washing, proper etiquette of covering of the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing and avoiding contact with others while they are sick. Rest helps the infected. For the severely affected adequate medical treatment is available. Someone who gets symptoms of fever and cough or sore throat should seek a doctor's advice for treatment," Koul told rediff.com.
A senior health officer also confirmed that two cases of swine flu were detected and treated in the cold desert region of Ladakh region two weeks ago.
Sources also said that swine flu had claimed two lives in Kashmir recently. However, senior health officials denied any person having succumbed to the infection.
