Thousands of Delhi University students held a protest march on Wednesday demanding the arrest of the killer of Radhika Tanwar, the 21-year-old girl who was shot dead on Tuesday. She was crossing a footbridge on her way to college when she was shot. The incident came on a day when the city was celebrating International Women's Day.
Holding placards, the students marched from Ramlal Anand College in DU South Campus towards India Gate. The protestors raised slogans such as 'We want justice', demanding the immediate arrest of the culprit.
Shahnawaz Hussain, Bharatiya Janata Party's member of Parliament from Bhagalpur, accused the government for not tackling crime against women seriously. He was referring to the growing number of incidents against women in the past one year, and described Delhi as the crime capital of India. "Home Minister P Chidambaram should own up the responsibility," he said.
Chidambaram summoned Delhi police chief B K Gupta to his office and sought an explanation from him in this regard.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit met Radhika's family at the latter's residence in Naraina village and assured them that the government will ensure the family gets justice, an official said.
Suman Nalwa, deputy commissioner (crime against women), said the case was being handled by the local police. "This particular cell was created in 1983, and we look after matrimonial disputes. Unless new guidelines are issued, we cannot do anything about it," she told rediff.com.
Attempts to reach BK Gupta did not yield any results.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police carried out raids at several places in a bid to nab the accused, believed to be in his twenties, but have so far not been able to make any arrest.
