The Bhoomi Poojan ceremony, part of a Hindu ceremony held every year in Srinagar's city centre Lal Chowk, was disrupted on Thursday morning by accidental firing from the automatic rifle of a local cop.

Two people, including a station house officer, were killed and a deputy superintendent of police was injured.

Station House Officer, Maisuma Police Station, Ghulam Nabi Pare was killed and Deputy Superintendent of Police Ghulam Jeelani Baba was injured.

Border Security Force jawans, positioned nearby, mistook the firing for a militant attack and killed one Mohammad Ameen.

The head constable responsible for the incident has been taken into custody and probe initiated.
