This Sunday, the world witnessed the closest, brightest supermoon of this year.
Millions across the globe saw the moon in its 'full moon' stage, and at its closest point to earth during its yearly orbit.
For just 26 minutes, the moon reached its full perigee stage, taking it to within 221,765 miles of earth.
The supermoon on Sunday was the second in a trio of supermoons this year, with one having happened on July 12 and the next one due to appear on September 9. To have three in such close proximity is very rare and it is not expected that this will happen again until 2034. In general, supermoons occur on average every 13 months.
Many enthusiasts grabbed their mobile phones to take a snapshot of the spectacle
