Six persons received injuries after they jumped off a running train fearing their compartment had caught fire, Railway officials said.

The incident involving the Ernakulam-Guwahati Express took place near Eluru town in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

The passengers of S-7 compartment pulled the chain and stopped the train after they heard loud noise coming from under their bogie and also saw thick dust arising from track.

The driver noticed that V-belt of the dynamo had been cut, which was creating the sound. He rectified the problem, they said.

After the train moved some distance, the passengers observed some fire sparks and six of them jumped from the compartment in panic, the officials said.

They suffered injuries and admitted in Eluru Government Hospital. Four of them were discharged after receiving medical aid and they left for their destinations in the same train. The other two are shifted to Vijayawada Railway Hospital, they said.

The officials clarified that no fire incident had taken place in the train.
