The death of the gangrape victim in Singapore has provoked sharp protests in Lucknow. However, unlike the recent past when demonstrators displayed anger, the protests remained silent on Saturday.

Protestors came out on the streets of Lucknow in large numbers and marched down to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, where they staged silent sit-in demonstration. Besides organised groups, individuals too kept coming out to join the demonstration.

Some local voluntary organisations propose to also light candles at Gandhi's statue tonight as a mark of homage to the braveheart who succumbed to the grievous injuries sustained in the gangrape.

"This is a solemn moment therefore we are staging a silent protest without any slogan-shouting . Later this evening, we will take out a candle light march followed by lighting of candles under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi", said Madhu Garg, the local convenor of All India Democratic Women's Association.
