A major tragedy was averted in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Tuesday following a timely detection of four powerful improvised explosive devices by the army and local police.

According to the police, the four IED's were planted by militants under a culvert in Dardpora village in Kupwara district.

"The timely detection prevented a major tragedy", a police spokesman said. "These explosive devices were later disposed off by the bomb disposal squad of the police, without causing any damages."

The police have registered a case and further investigations are on, the spokesman said.
