The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine if the Special Investigation Team appointed by it to inquire into the 2002 post-Godhra riot cases can share its report with the Nanavati Commission, which too is probing into the Godhra train carnage and the subsequent riots.

A bench headed by Justice D K Jain said it will look into the matter, when the SIT approached it with a plea for its direction on the issue, saying the commission has issued notices to its officers, who had conducted the probe.

The SIT, headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation director R K Raghavan, was appointed by the apex court in April 2009 to probe the cases and the team had submitted its report in 2011.

The SIT was probing nine cases -- the Godhra train carnage and eight post-Godhra riot cases.

The Nanavati Commission was set up in 2002 to probe into the Godhra train carnage and the state-wide riots that erupted in its wake. The two-member commission of Justices G T Nanavati and Akshay Mehta had been set up by the Gujarat government.
