Rs 69 lakh unaccounted money seized in poll-bound UP

Unaccounted money totaling nearly Rs 69 lakh were recovered from different parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Rs 6 lakh from an Samajwadi Party MLA, during the ongoing drive to check flow of illegal money during assembly elections, police said on Wednesday.

"A total Rs 68.93 lakh unaccounted cash was recovered from different parts of the state, of which Rs 6 lakh were recovered in Sultanpur district from SP MLA Bhola Paswan," Additional DG Police Subesh Kumar Singh told mediapersons in Lucknow.

The police intercepted the vehicle of the MLA at Sultanpur road railway crossing and on checking found Rs 6 lakh from the MLA travelling in it, he said. Paswan represents Saraimeer in Azamgarh district.

Similarly, he said Rs 14.61 lakh were recovered in Fatehpur, Rs 30 lakh in Hardoi, Rs 7 lakh in Varanasi, Rs 4.49 lakh in Lucknow, Rs 3.98 lakh in Etah and Rs 2.85 lakh in Azamgarh.

There had also been a recovery of Rs 10 crore in Panchsheelnagar. Singh said though it was said to be that of

Axis Bank, the team carrying it did not have any documents relating to it. Income tax department officials were looking into it, the ADG added.
