Where does India stand in global tourism?

India has been ranked 52nd in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 2015 compiled by the World Economic Forum. It has gained 13 places over its last year's standing of 62nd out of the 141 countries listed in the rankings.

The top 5 countries with highest score are Spain, France, Germany, United States, United Kingdom and the bottom 5 countries with lowest scores are Chad, Guinea, Angola, Yemen, Mauritania.

The map, above, shows the travel and tourism competitiveness index 2015 score for 141 countries.

The index considers four sub-indexes and 14 pillars besides 90 indicators.

The four sub-indexes and 14 pillars are:

Enabling Environment

  • Business Environment
  • Safety and Security
  • Health and Hygiene
  • Human Resources and Labour Market
  • Information and Communication Technology Readiness

T&T Policy and Enabling Conditions

  • Prioritization of Travel and Tourism
  • International Openness
  • Price Competitiveness
  • Environmental Sustainability

Infrastructure

  • Air Transport Infrastructure
  • Ground and Port Infrastructure
  • Tourist Service Infrastructure

Natural and Cultural Resources

  • Natural Resources
  • Cultural Resources and Business Travel

India has the score of 4.02 in this index. The infographic, below, shows the change in score for each 14 pillars for India from 2007 to 2015.

According to the infographics, India has performed well in tourism service, health and hygiene and need to improve in terms of Safety and security, human resources, environmental sustainability and ground and port infrastructure.
