Child mortality in rural India is alarming

In rural areas of India, the death rate of children under the age one has increased by 16 per cent from 2011 to 2015.

The death rate is the number of children under the age one died per 1000 children of that age.

Even though the overall death rate of children under the age of one in India has decreased by 7 per cent, the number from rural India is disturbing.

In urban India, the story is the total opposite. The death rate of children under the age one has decreased by 27 per cent from 2011 to 2015.

 

Rediff Labs analysed the state wise death rate of children taken from the Census of India sample registration system statistical report 2011 and 2015.

The below map shows the death rate of children under the age one for the year 2015.

The states with a high death rate are Uttar Pradesh (69.3), Madhya Pradesh (70.4), and Rajasthan (63.4).

The states with a low death rate are Kerala (12.3), Delhi (25.9), Maharashtra (22.2) and Tamil Nadu (22.3).

Urban and rural India: 

The above map shows the state wise change in the death rate of children under the age one in urban and rural areas from 2011 to 2015. The size of the circle shows the death rate of children under the age one in 2015.

In urban areas, the death rate has decreased from 2011 to 2015. The urban area of the states where the death rate has highly decreased is Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

In rural area of the states where the death rate is highly increased are Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Assam.

Male and Female Children:

For India, the change in the death rate of children under the age one has decreased by 7 per cent for both male and female children from 2011 to 2015.

The above map shows the state wise change in death rate of male and female children under the age one.

For male children the only state where the death rate has highly increased is Himachal Pradesh.

And where the death rate has decreased are Odisha, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

For female children, the death rate has increased in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala and the states where the death rate of the female children has highly decreased are Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Assam.
