Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who on Monday began his three-day visit to Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, has been accused by the Bharatiya Janata Party of neglecting the constituency he has been representing for over a decade.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday described Congress Vice-president Rahul Gandhi's visit to his constituency of Amethi as a 'forced' tour, and termed it as one of the most underdeveloped places in Uttar Pradesh.

"Rahul Gandhi's tour to Amethi should be called a forced tour to his own constituency. It is only because HRD Minister Smriti Irani had been to Amethi that acted as a teaser to Rahul Gandhi to force him to go to his constituency," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.

"Today, Amethi, which has been under the Gandhi scion for long, should have been a developed place, but the irony is that the constituency is one of the most underdeveloped constituencies of the state. The per-capita income of Amethi is one of the lowest in Uttar Pradesh," he added.

Gandhi is on a three-day visit to Amethi, his first visit since December 2014.

Attacking Rahul Gandhi, Irani insisted that Rahul’s team announced his visit only after she made plans to go to Amethi. "I am glad, at least, Rahul is following my footsteps, the people of Amethi will get to see him," she said.
