A policeman and a militant were killed in a fierce gunfight in south Kashmir on Saturday, according to the police.

Troops of Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group of the police had jointly surrounded a house in Kellar village in south Kashmir's Pulwama district after receiving information about the presence of militants inside it.

According to a senior police officer, when the security forces asked the militants to surrender, they opened fire, killing a head police constable on the spot. One militant was killed in the ensuing gunfight.

The police and RR troops are still searching the area, he said.
