Wednesday’s newspapers report that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pinstriped suit monogrammed with the words ‘Narendra Damodardas Modi’ will be auctioned, along with other gifts received by him, in Surat, the proceeds from which will go to a Clean Ganga project.

The monogrammed suit had generated a storm of controversy, was dubbed ostentatious and even attributed by some as one of the reasons for the BJP’s poor showing in the recent Delhi elections, where it could manage only a measly three seats.

For us at Rediff.com, the morning’s news held no novelty, as we had reported on the suit’s impending auction on February 12, ahead of anyone else. The suggestion to auction it, we had said, came from a senior Union minister, and the proceeds would go to an NGO in Varanasi.

Here’s the link to our report.
