In the first top-level contact after United Progressive Alliance government assumed power, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York later this month.
The Russian leader will visit India in the first week of December as part of the process of strengthening bilateral ties.
Singh, who travels to the US on September 19, will be in the US for eight days during which he is expected to meet a number of world leaders, including US President George W Bush and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
The exact dates and schedule of Putin's India trip are being worked out through diplomatic channels, Russian embassy sources in New Delhi said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will also tour India, possibly in the second week of next month, for talks with his Indian counterpart K Natwar Singh.
