Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday awarded the Padma Shri award to Professor Noburu Karashima for his contribution in the field of literature and education.

Professor Noburu had been unable to collect his prize at the ceremony held last month for health reasons.

The Japanese scholar had spent several years in India as a research scholar on South Indian history and epigraphy at the University of Madras in Chennai.

Professor Noburu is fluent in Tamil language and is an acknowledged authority on medieval South Indian inscriptions.

He is currently Professor Emeritus in the University of Tokyo.
