On Friday, for the second day in a row, residents across Mumbai woke up to unusually thick smog in the air. The source of the smoke that seems to have engulfed most of the city is a massive fire that broke out at the Deonar garbage dumping ground in north-east Mumbai early on Thursday morning.

A couple of fire incidents at the Deonar dumping ground caused heavy smoke, which soon spread across the eastern suburbs, making breathing difficult.

According to experts on air quality, what was alarming was that at six location out of nine where air quality monitoring happens, the Air Quality Index was found to be ‘very poor’.
