With the arrest of Chhota Rajan on Sunday the Indian government is expected to proceed with talks of his extradition to face charges under Indian law.
Thanks to an improvement in diplomatic channels and extradition treaties with several nations, Rajan's name is on a growing list of criminals and terrorists who have been or are being extradited back to India.
Rediff.com takes a look at some instances of underworld dons and terrorists detained or arrested in a foreign country and deported or extradited back to India.
1) Chhota Rajan
Wanted in several murders in India; detained in Bali on Sunday and is likely to be deported to India soon.
2) Yakub Memon
Wanted in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, Memon was arrested in Nepal and brought to India; was hanged in July.
3) Abu Salem
Wanted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and the murder of film producer Gulshan Kumar; was arrested in Portugal in 2002 and extradited to India four years later.
4) Yasin Bhatkal
The founder of Indian Mujahideen, responsible for a series of bomb blasts in 2007-08, was arrested in Nepal in 2013 and handed over to Indian police.
5) Iqbal Kaskar
Brother of Dawood Ibrahim, Kaskar was deported from the UAE to India in 2003 but acquitted of charges of a murder in 2007; UAE has deported several associates of Ibrahim, including 10 in 2006
6) Ejaz Pathan
Wanted in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case, he was deported from the UAE to India in 2003.
In recent years, Bangladesh, UAE and Saudi Arabia have deported or extradited several terrorists and criminals wanted by India.
