Technocrat Sam Pitroda on Wednesday said India as a country lacked people with strong leadership qualities at all levels, but expressed satisfaction with the performance of those running the United Progressive Alliance government.

"Leaders create a vision and break it down into pieces to be implemented by different people," he said addressing a Cement Corporation of India leadership summit in New Delhi. India needs strong leadership at all levels as there is a crisis in all walks of life like social, political, business and infrastructure fields, said Pitroda, who heads Worldtel.

He, however, said he was satisfied with the present government and the people involved in it. He credited Prime Minister Manmohan Sigh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Planning Commission Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia for their commitment and the policies undertaken by them.

Pitroda, who is currently the Chairman of the 'Knowledge Commission' set up by the prime minister, was of the view that technology was the starting point for change. Attributing the telecom industry's success to changes brought in by late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, he said similar changes should be carried out in new areas with the help of information technology.

These changes should be introduced in areas like right to information, education, vocational training, patents, intellectual property rights, innovations, health, and e-governance.
