Amid India's quest for a permanent berth in the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan on Monday said some aspirants for the powerful seat were creating divisions among the world community.

The idea of permanent membership of the security council is contrary to the spirit of democracy and accountability, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told the National Assembly or lower house of parliament.

Pakistan recently expressed concern after US President Barack Obama backed India's candidature for permanent membership of the Security Council. India has also received the support of France, the UK, Germany and Russia for the top UN berth.

In an apparent reference to India, he said some aspirants for a permanent security council seat were creating divisions among the world community. The restructuring of the security council should be done developing a consensus among all member countries, Qureshi said, adding Pakistan is not seeking a permanent seat.

Brazil, Germany, India and Japan launched a joint bid for permanent UNSC seats ahead of the United Nations' 50th anniversary in 2005. Italy-Pakistan-led Uniting for Consensus group opposed any expansion of permanent members on security council.
