With terrorist activities on the rise, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Friday said security agencies needed to evaluate their gadgetry and adopt latest technology to deal with the menace.
Inaugurating the International Security, Safety and Fire Exhibition 2005 in New Delhi, he said overseas firms dealing in security technologies were gaining interest in the potential market options that India offered.
"It is now imperative for security organisations to get updated on the latest technologies and acquire the latest gadgets to deal with the scourge of terrorism," he said, noting that there had been a surge in terrorist violence in the past one decade.
Patil said the issue of security had gained importance since the attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon, the Indian Parliament and more recently the pre-Diwali blasts in Delhi.
"Acts of terrorism, abductions, hijackings and killings are on the rise, threatening the principles of democracy and freedom," Patil said, adding that there was now a plethora of terrorist organisations and networks such as the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Jaish-e-Mohammad.
Referring to a growing market for security applications in India, he said, "A process of transfer of security processes has begun and with liberalisation of the economy, the security industry in India will have even greater commercial opportunities."
