A driver of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation oil tanker was killed and his assistant injured when suspected militants attacked the vehicle in Balochistan province of southwest Pakistan on Friday, police said.

The tanker was on its way to Karachi from Afghanistan when armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire at it near Pishin. Driver Abdul Hameed died instantly while his assistant was taken to a hospital in provincial capital Quetta with bullet wounds.

The tanker was damaged, police said. Security forces launched a search for the attacks.

Dozens of people have been killed in attacks on NATO trucks and tankers in southwest and northwest Pakistan over the past few years.
