A Pakistani provincial legislator and three of his bodyguards were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Karachi on Thursday.
The police said that four armed assailants opened fire on the car of the Mutthaida Qaumi Movement legislator Manzar Imam in Orangi Town of Karachi which left him badly injured. Three of his bodyguards were killed on the spot.
"Manzar Imam later passed away in hospital," a police official said. The four armed assailants fled from the scene after carrying out the attack.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Karachi has for long witnesses bloody clashes between workers of various political parties.
Reports said Imam's killing triggered tension in several areas of Karachi that are controlled by the MQM, which is a member of the Pakistan People's Party-led governments at the Centre and in southern Sindh province.
