Over 70 per cent polling was on Monday recorded in the by-polls at Kukshi and Sonkatch assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh where elections passed off peacefully.

Kukshi recorded over 70 per cent polling while at Sonkatch, over 80 per cent voters exercised their right to franchise, State Joint Election Officer Dhyaneshwar B Patil told PTI in Bhopal.

No untoward incident was reported from any part of the twin assembly segments.

About 100 out of a total of 243 polling booths were sensitive in Sonkatch, while 15 out of the 179 polling booths were sensitive in Kukshi, he said.

The by-election was necessitated in Kukshi due to death of the leader of opposition in Madhya Pradesh assembly, Jamuna Devi, while Sonkatch seat fell vacant after Sajjan Singh Verma became a Member of Parliament and resigned.

Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded former MP Phoolchand Verma's son Rajendra Verma from Sonkatch, while state minister Ranjana Baghel's husband Mukam Singh Kirade is their nominee from Kukshi.

Congress has fielded Jamuna Devi's niece Nisha Singhar from Kukshi and MP Sajjan Singh Verma's nephew Arjun Verma from Sonkatch.

There were 1,56,821 and 1,17,972 voters in Sonkatch and Kukshi constituencies respectively. Counting of votes would be held on February 17 in both the constituencies.

Meanwhile, about 70 per cent polling was recorded in the bypoll at Sanjari Ballod assembly constituency in neighbouring Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Monday, officials said.

No incident of violence was reported during the polling, though there was a clash between workers of two parties in Gurur village which was brought under control soon, they said.

The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of sitting MLA Madan Lal Sahu of BJP. The main battle here is between BJP candidate Kumaribai, who is Sahu's wife, and Congress contestant Mohan Patel.

The counting of votes will be done on February 17. There are 187 polling booths in the constituency, including 27 sensitive and six hyper-sensitive, the official said.
