Tension prevailed in the Osmania University campus in Hyderabad after police caned and lobbed teargas shells on pro-Telangana students when they began pelting stones on the security personnel.
The situation on the varsity campus which witnessed series of clashes between pro-Telangana students and police personnel for the past two days, had relatively remained calm since morning but by evening the clashes erupted again, police sources said.
Activists who took out a rally from the Manjeera Hostel on OU campus towards the RTC Hospital adjacent to it, raised slogans against the MPs and MLAs belonging to Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh and later burnt their effigies.
Following this, police prevented them from continuing protests and dispersed the protesters and caned them. Enraged, agitators began pelting stones at the police, who lobbed teargas shells to quell the violence, sources said.
Earlier during the day, pro-Telangana students held a demonstration before the Osmania University police station as part of the 48-hour bandh being observed in 10 Telangana districts and indulged in sporadic stone pelting and also demanded for release of arrested students, a senior police officer said.
Four students were taken into custody in connection with the protests today, the officer said.
Atleast 12 protesters were injured while 10 police personnel sustained injuries during the clashes yesterday, he said.
