West Bengal police found three policemen of Jharkhand in a red light area of Asansol during a raid and took them into custody.
“Three armed policemen from Jharkhand’s Koderma district were taken into custody after they were found in a brothel at Kulti near the coal town of Asansol in Burdwan district on Friday,” a police official said from Kulti.
Their driver and another person accompanying them were also taken into custody, the police official said.
After contacting Koderma police, all of them were sent back with an escort sent from Jharkhand, he added.
When contacted, Koderma Superintendent of Police Y S Ramesh said one havaldar and three constables had taken a prisoner from Koderma jail to a Ranchi hospital for treatment.
They hired a private vehicle for returning to Koderma. While three of them took a detour along with the prisoner to Asansol, the fourth policeman left the team and gone home.
Ramesh said all the four were suspended for dereliction of duty.
When asked whether the suspension was made as the three policemen went to a brothel, he said, “Everything comes under dereliction of duty.”
Interestingly, prisoner Birju Yadav, a murder convict, returned to Koderma on his own and surrendered to the jail authorities on Saturday, Koderma jail superintendent Kishore Lakhra said.
