The devastating cyclone in Oman has claimed the life of an Indian and injured two while nine of their compatriots are missing.

The dead Indian has been identified as Prakash of Mysore in Karnataka, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed told PTI in New Delhi on Thursday night.

Earlier, the Indian High Commission had informed the government that Prakash was from Kerala.

At least 12 people were killed in the cyclone that hit coastal areas of Oman on Wednesday.

Two other Indians, Dharmarajan and Mohd Abdul Rahim, both of Andhra Pradesh, were injured in the storm, Ahamed said.

Dharmarajan, who was earlier reported missing, has returned home after medication for a minor injury, he said.

Rahim is admitted in hospital with leg injuries.

Among the missing, five are from Kerala and two each from Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.

The missing people have been identified as Sajit Kumar (Calicut, Kerala), Udayan (Guruvayur, Kerala), Sreenu (Andhra), Sami (Andhra), Mohd Ali (Ernakulam, Kerala), Binu (Ernakulam, Kerala) and Prithvi Pal Singh of Punjab.

The name of another missing person from Punjab is not known yet, the external affairs ministry said.

The Sultanate hosts 3.86 lakh Indians and the government said it is trying to ascertain their safety.
