Narayanan is new National Security Adviser

The government on Tuesday announced the appointment of M K Narayanan as National Security Adviser, a post he was holding temporarily after the passing away of J N Dixit.

The appointment of 70-year-old Narayanan, who is currently the Prime Minister's Special Adviser, ends speculation whether he would be confirmed as National Security Advisor.

PMO sources said that Narayanan, a former Intelligence Bureau chief, would continue to look after "whatever he was doing earlier", an apparent reference to matters of internal security he was handling.
