Noted rights activist Kannabiran passes away

Noted human rights activist and lawyer K G Kannabiran, who filed many cases against the police over alleged fake encounters with Maoists, died in Hyderabad on Thursday after protracted illness. He was 82.

Kannabiran, who was bed-ridden for the last six months, breathed his last at his house at Maredpalli in Hyderabad. He is survived by wife, a son and two daughters, according to family sources.

Kannabiran, who hailed from Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district, founded the People's Union of Civil Liberties in 1994 and was also president of the Andhra Pradesh Civil Rights Committee for 15 years.

He took up the cause of farmers and was a known champion of revolutionary groups. Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Minister K Jana Reddy, Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu, Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi, former MP Jaganmohan Reddy and BV Raghavulu of Communist Party of India-Marxist were among those who expressed condolence over Kannabirans death.

The last rites of Kannabiran were performed in Maredpalli locality on Thursday night, revolutionary writer Varavara Rao said.
