Muslim clerics in Bihar's Bettiah district have announced that they will not solemnise the nikaah (marriage) in case music, orchestra and dance are part of the marriage party.
Besides, a committee under the supervision of the imams of all mosques in Bettiah has decided that some from the community would work as watchdogs to ensure that music, orchestra and dance are not part of a Muslim marriage.
"Clerics will not solemnise the nikaah if music, orchestra and dance are part of it," Maulana Nazmuddin Qashmi, a cleric of Jangi masjid in Bettiah, told rediff.com over the phone on Friday.
Qashmi said they would also launch a campaign among Muslim youths to create awareness that Islam prohibits music, orchestra and dance in marriage parties.
He said it was a matter of serious concern that orchestra and dance were being increasingly used in Muslim marriage parties. "It has become a fashion, and is against Islam," he said.
Another Muslim cleric, Qazi Nesar Ahmad, too shared similar sentiments and said Muslims were violating Islam's diktats by organising music and dance during weddings.
