Cocking a snook at international opinion, North Korea has launched at least six missiles -- some reports say Pyongyang launched three missiles -- including the long-range Taepodong 2 that is capable of reaching targets in the United States. The launch took place on July 4, America's independence day.

While most of the missiles fell harmlessly into the Sea of Japan, reports said the long-range missile failed shortly after launch.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to meet today to deliberate the devlelopment, while South Korea has stepped up its military preparedness following the missile launch.

Condemnation was quick to follow with the United States dubbing the missile launch as a 'provocative act', while Japan called it a 'grave problem in terms of peace and stability for the international society.' The White House has also warned North Korea about further 'provocative acts'.

Reports said North Korea may launch more missiles in the coming days.
