The navy on Wednesday rushed two rescue teams to Jui village in Raigad district, worst hit by floods and landslide even as heavy incessant rains continued to batter the Konkan region of Maharashtra.

However, the teams are yet to reach the village and rescue operations have still not commenced as the place is inaccessible due to heavy floods, district authorities said.

Heavy rains continued to lash the district on the fourth day on Wednesday. However, there are no fresh cases of landslides from the district, official sources said.

Eight persons were killed and several more trapped under the debris in a fresh landslide at Dasgaon, in Raigad district, police sources said on Wednesday.

"Eight bodies have been recovered from under the debris after the landslide which occurred on Tuesday night," police sources said adding that 40 persons are still feared trapped and efforts are on to rescue them.

Rescue work was initiated on Wednesday morning after there was little respite from heavy rains.

In Kondiwate, where 34 people were killed in a landslide, only three bodies were recovered till Tuesday while the search is on for the remaining bodies, the sources said.

Mangaon, located off the Mumbai-Goa NH 17 is totally flooded and Panvel town in Raigad district is also cut off from rest of the state. Heavy rains have hampered vehicular movement on the highway, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was to undertake an aeriel survey of the district, has cancelled the tour due to inclement weather.
