Under attack from both the Opposition and its Left allies, the government has agreed for a discussion on the Nanavati Commission Report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The government's decision was conveyed on Tuesday by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to Bharatiya Janata Party Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra over telephone.
"Azad said the government was ready for a discussion and we insisted that they allow an Adjournment Motion, to which he agreed," Malhotra told PTI.
Earlier in the day, several National Democratic Alliance members of Parliament gave notices for adjournment motion against the United Progressive Alliance government's "failure" to take action against those indicted by the Nanavati commission which probed the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The opposition alliance has called a meeting of its leaders on Wednesday morning to draw up the strategy in Parliament for the day. BJP and its allies also issued whips to their MPs to be present and vote for the motion, alliance sources said.
Malhotra, Akali Dal leader S S Dhindsa and Prabhunath Singh of Janata Dal (United) were among those who gave notices for the adjournment motion.
The Nanavati Commission report rocked Parliament on Tuesday as BJP and Akali Dal members made a vociferous demand for action against those involved in the violence leading to adjournment of both Houses for the day.
