A 35-year-old farmer from the Washim district in Vidarbha allegedly committed suicide after writing a suicide note addressed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis drawing his attention to the agrarian crisis and plight of cultivators in the region.

"One Atmaram Landge, from Jaulka Railway village took the extreme step by consuming poison on September 10, two days before 'Pola' festival, considered important to the farming community", Investigating Officer Assistant Police Inspector, Jaulka Railway police station, Kiran Salve told PTI.

"He owned few acres of farm land and sowed groundnuts," he added.

We have recovered four suicide notes -- addressed to his wife, son, uncle and the Maharashtra chief minister, the police said.

"You (Fadnavis) are an educated chief minister hailing from Vidarbha region and we (people) of region always supported you. Since you belong to the region, you must be quite aware of the problems faced by the farmers here.,” the letter said.

"But I thing you are deliberately ignoring their plight and prompting young farmers like me to take the extreme step," Landge alleged in his suicide note.

"Farmers from Vidarbha are not apprehensive of the drought like situation but the time does not allow it. You are providing all sorts of facilities including handsome salary, allowances, pay commission and various other benefits to the industrialists than why not such facilities to the farmers," he said.
