The condition of Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi continued to remain critical for the twelveth day on Friday.
"His medical condition is the same. He continues to remain critical and on life support," said Dr Vineet Suri, consultant, neurology, Indraprastha Apollo hospital.
62-year-old Dasmunsi, who had suffered a severe heart attack, was admitted to the AIIMS on October 13. On Monday last, he was shifted to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.
"When he was first admitted here, his left ventricular system had completely failed. A condition known as pulmonary edema in medical terms," Dr D K Sharma, All India Institute of Medical Sciences , medical superintendent said.
The
edema results in swelling of the lungs which causes respiratory failure, said another doctor at AIIMS. "The reduction of oxygen supply to the body parts, also known as hypoxia, is the main complication in such conditions," he added.
In case of Dasmunsi, brain stopped getting sufficient oxygen supply resulting from edema damaging some of the neurons responsible for key functions of the body.
This shortage of supply of oxygen to neurons causes a cascade of abnormal events in the body. The neurons can suffer temporary dysfunction, or there may be irreversible damage to nerve cells, he added.
"Currently he is being administered life saving drugs and his neurological condition is being closely monitored," said a doctor at Apollo.
