Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today alleged that Mumbai terror attacks could not have been possible without "local support" and accused the government of shying away from taking action due to votebank politics.
"The smallest of person knows that such a big attack is not possible without the local support...I want to know who is stopping them from taking action...this is because of vote bank politics," Modi told BJP's National Council meeting alleging that all policies of UPA are driven by vote-bank politics.
Modi's comments came three weeks after he stoked a controversy when he attacked the UPA government for asking Pakistan to accept the statement of Ajmal Amir Kasab, lone terrorist caught alive for Mumbai attacks, saying the country itself "does not have a similar provision under its laws". Talking of zero tolerance to terrorism, he regretted that the last few years have witnessed a series of such incidents.
"Antakwad ko usi ki bhasha mein jhawab dena padega(terrorism has to be paid back in the same coin)." But he did not elaborate.
Modi said that soon after the Mumbai terror strikes when the prime minister addressed the Nation he was "dissappointing" as he should have talked of zero tolerance to terror. "That time I came under attack for criticizing the PM, but I still stand by what I said."
Modi was caustic in his criticism of Manmohan Singh saying that the "presence" of the prime minister is not felt.
