One person died and three others were injured in a landslide caused by heavy downpour near Haji Ali in central Mumbai, according to the Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The landslide took place near Hill View building adjoining Heera Panna shopping centre at 12.30 pm, injuring four persons. They were rushed to Nair Hospital where one of them was declared dead on arrival, civic officials said.
In another incident, three persons, including two women, were injured when a tree collapsed on an autorickshaw in suburban Mulund, they said. A man was washed away in flood waters in Khed town of Konkan region which has been receiving incessant rains.
The deceased was identified as Vishwas Shankar Pawar, the sources said.
Incidents of house and wall collapse were reported from several parts of the metropolis but no one was injured. Several hutments near Mithi River were evacuated after the water level rose to 4.2 metre. Thirty-three people were shifted out of a resort in Palghar by firefighters.
Residents were moved out of a 'chawl' (multi-storeyed one room tenements) in Marol after their houses developed cracks due to the incessant showers which are lashing the financial capital and adjoining areas for the last three days, they said.
BMC had issued a high tide (above 4.50 metres) alert for Monday.
Train services, the transport lifeline of the metropolis, on Central Railway and Harbour line, were disrupted in the morning but restored by late afternoon. Office-goers had a tough time reaching their destinations.
"Due to heavy downpour and flooding of Mithi river channel and adjoining water ways in Mumbai, Central and Harbour line services were disrupted from 6.30 am. Services on the main line were restored at 12.00 pm and on the Harbour line at 15.20 pm," Central Railway PRO A K Singh said.
Altogether 630 suburban services were cancelled on both lines. Outstation trains also bore the brunt. Ten express trains were cancelled while some others were rescheduled or short-terminated, railway sources said.
Water-logging was reported from areas like Hindmata, Milan subway, Vile Parle, Dadar, Andheri, Kurla, Santacruz, ikhroli, Chembur, Sion, Parel among others.
Civic-run schools in Mumbai declared a holiday. Meanwhile, incessant rains flooded Pune's low-lying areas as the wet spell in parts of Western Maharashtra continued unabated.
Heavy overnight showers, that continued on Monday, led to the opening of gates of overflowing Khadakwasla dam and discharging of water into Mutha river. Some areas on the river bank were flooded following discharge of dam water.
A report from neighbouring Satara district said the heavy rainfall led to overflowing of Koyna Dam in the region and release of over 50,000 cusecs of water.
