Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he was moved by the trust the common man had reposed in him and he would not let it besmirched.

Addressing the 26th mahila sammelan at Tarapur in Anand, Modi said, "I am moved by the trust the common man has reposed in me and my government. I will see to it that this trust is not besmirched."

He said the Rs 5 lakh that was contributed towards 'Shiksha Nidhi' (education fund) by the people of Anand and Kheda clearly shows the trust had reposed trust in him. In the past, before his government came to power, people came with memorandums when such sammelans were held. However, today, they come with contribution to the Shiksha nidhi.

"I have held 25 mahila sammelans earlier but I never turned the occasion into political mudslinging. I have tried to maintain the dignity and talked about only the women's issues. I am sure when the Assembly polls come, the people will give their reply," he said alluding to the Koli sammelan held in Anand on Wednesday where he and his government came in for sharp criticism.

Taking a dig at UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Modi said "The Koli sammelan was held on a cue from 'Delhi niwas Italian mahila'. Yet I consider the Koli event like a 'kala tikka' for my government. This 'tikka' is usually put on the cheeks of kids to ward off evil eyes."

Pointing out the UPA government's failure in arresting price rise, he said this has hurt the poor the most. The sigh of the poor will eventually blow away the UPA government from the Centre.

He said his government is keen to develop Khambhat seashore to enhance employment opportunities. This will benefit Tarapur, Sojitra and Petlad talukas.

Terming women's contribution to the white revolution in Anand as immense, he said Amul Dairy was Sardar Patel's dream and it came about through mahila shakti in breeding and looking after the cattle.

''My government is committed to join hands with mahila shakti in the march towards Gujarat's progress,'' he said.
