The Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee, a conglomerate of major churches of the state, on Wednesday appealed to all the church members not to participate in the International Yoga Day on June 21.

The move was taken in protest against the observation of the day on Sunday, the sacred day for the Christians, MKHC Secretary Reverend R Lalrinsanga in a release said.

Majority of the population in Mizoram is Christian.

Meanwhile, MKHC leaders on Wednesday called on Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla and urged him to conduct a thorough study before introducing yoga in educational institutions, an official statement said.

MKHC, representing 14 major churches, also expressed displeasure over the intention to observe the International Day of Yoga on Sunday.

Many church leaders believed that yoga is linked to Hinduism and Christians should not be involved with it.
