Moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday sought intervention of the United Nations in resolving Kashmir issue, saying bilateral talks between India and Pakistan have failed to settle it.

"The United Nations has a moral and legal obligation to help settle the issue of Kashmir in accordance with the wishes and will of the people. Past failures to settle the question should not deter the United Nations. Now more than ever, the United Nations must renew efforts to bring about the promised settlement," the Mirwaiz said.

He was addressing the Kashmir Contact Group of Organisation of Islamic Conference, which met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

He said resolution of Kashmir issue cannot be left on governments of India and Pakistan as bilateral efforts of these countries in the past have failed.

The Mirwaiz said Hurriyat wants a peaceful and lasting solution with the participation of all parties - India, Pakistan and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
