Militant killed in encounter with security forces in J&K

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of south Kashmir. Mukhtar Ahmed/ Rediff.com reports.

One militant was killed in an ongoing encounter in south Kashmir Pulwama district this afternoon.

A senior police officer said troops of Rashtriya Rifles and police surrounded Lalhar village near Kakpora in Pulwama district this afternoon.

"The operation was launched on specific information about presence of a group of militants in the village, " the officer said.

He said militants opened fire at the surrounding troops triggering an encounter.

"One militant has been killed in the encounter so far. The operation is on," he added.

Sunday's gunfight came a day after five militants and two army troopers were killed in an encounter in frontier Kupwara district.
