An Indian businessman, who was kidnapped near his home on Monday, was on Tuesday rescued by Philippine police after a raid and gunfight at a house east of Manila, officials said.

The operation left one suspected kidnapper dead, they added.

Gunmen abducted Karnail Singh Chahal in suburban Marikina city and demanded a ransom of Pesos 5 mn ($94,000), the police said.

Three other suspected kidnappers, one of whom is an Indian citizen, were also arrested after the gun-battle in Rizal province's San Mateo town, 20 kilometres northeast of Manila, reports said.
