Refuting reports about the arrest of a suspected Inter-Services Intelligence agent in Mumbai, the city police on Wednesday said Javed Abdul Gafoor Mozawala, is an Indian national who has been held for allegedly indulging in anti-national activities.

"Javed is an Indian national. He has visited Pakistan twice officially and has been in touch with two senior officials of the Pakistan high commission," said Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Himanshu Roy.

"So far, ISI name has not surfaced in the investigations but we have enough evidence to believe that Javed was working on the instructions and at the behest of two officials of the Pakistan high commission," Roy said thus quelling reports that Javed was an agent of Pakistan's ISI.

Javed, a resident of Mazgaon in south Mumbai, was arrested on December 10 on charges of spying for a foreign country and has been booked under the Official Secrets Act. He is currently in police custody till December 20.

The police have seized several incriminating documents from Javed's residence including manual of communications and tactics meant for Islamic terrorist organisations, telephone numbers of senior defence personnel, and photographs of defence establishments across the country and visa application forms of several persons for Pakistan.

According to the crime branch, Javed is a "well-embedded asset" of Pakistan and has been indulging in anti-national activities for several years. "He was an agent who used to liaison with Pakistan high commission to help people get visa to Pakistan," Roy said.
