A 35-year-old man, suspected to have Maoists links and wanted by West Bengal police, has been arrested from his hideout in Mumbai, Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad said on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip off that a criminal wanted by the West Bengal police was hiding in the city, the ATS sleuths laid a trap and apprehended the accused Aakher Abdul Gafar Mandal from near a bus stop in Govandi, the officials said.

"A country made revolver and a live cartridge was seized from his possession following which he was arrested under Arms Act and remanded in police custody for seven days by a local court," said Pradeep Sawant, deputy police commissioner, ATS.

The ATS was probing if the accused had any links with Maoists in West Bengal, Sawant said. "We are co-ordinating with the West Bengal police as he is wanted by them in their cases," he added.

On December 21 last year, a crude bomb exploded at Naroliya Anchal panchayat office in Murshidabad in which two persons, including panchayat head, was killed. The blast was allegedly executed by Mandal and his associates due to some rivalry, the ATS officials said.

The Murshidabad district police and Khodagram police station in West Bengal have booked him under relevant IPS and the Explosive Substances Act.
