Former Indian cricket team captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who is contesting the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Rajasthan’s Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, was on Sunday accompanied by his wife and former Bollywood actress Sangeeta Bijlani.

Bijlani, who joined Azharuddin in Rajasthan, was seen actively campaigning in the region, putting away speculation of the two going separate ways.

The former Miss India accompanied Azharuddin as he filed his nomination papers on Thursday. In his nomination, Azharuddin mentioned Bijlani as his wife.

Bijlani also joined the Congress party rally attended by the likes of former chief minister Ashok Gehlot and state president Sachin Pilot.

The actress had also campaigned for her husband in 2009, when Azharuddin was contesting from the Muradabad seat. People did not expect her to campaign this time around owing to strong rumours of the couple’s separation.

“Since Maam (Bijlani) has arrived, she has been meeting hundreds of women on a daily basis. She will be staying here till voting takes place on April 24,” informed Mujeeb Khan, a close aide of Azharuddin.

The cricketer’s son, Mohammad Asaduddin, seemed very happy seeing Bijlani campaign for his father.

“I am happy, that she (Bijlani) is here. The response of the people has been good and inshallah we will win the election,” Asaduddin told Rediff.com.
