Some disgruntled Bharatiya Janata Party workers in Chandigarh greeted Kirron Kher, party nominee for the local Lok Sabha seat, with black flags when she arrived in the city.

Kher was shown black flags at two places en route, sources said.

At a couple of places, the disgruntled workers also raised slogans against her.

The party has named Kher as the candidate from Chandigarh, ignoring three frontrunners including former Member of Parliament Satya Pal Jain, Chandigarh’s BJP unit President Sanjay Tandon and former Union minister Harmohan Dhawan.

When Kher's candidature was announced by the party high command on Saturday, there was a revolt in the Chandigarh unit of the BJP, leading to a few resignations by some office bearers of the city unit.

From the Chandigarh seat, where polling will be held on April 10, former Union railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal is seeking re-election as a Congress nominee.

Bansal had earlier downplayed the presence of prominent women -- former Miss India and AAP candidate Gul Panag and actor Kirron Kher -- in the fray, saying “paratroopers cannot perform overnight magic”.

Meanwhile, 58-year-old Kirron tried to downplay the protest against her by a section of BJP workers.

Seeking to reach out to those who were against her candidature on the grounds that she was an 'outsider', Kirron told reporters that she had her roots were in Chandigarh and she also had a connection with neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

Kiran, wife of veteran actor Anupam Kher, said she is contesting from the city where she was brought up and she would work to ensure Chandigarh's development.

"We will sort out any grievances which some people may have," she said and exuded confidence that she will win the Chandigarh seat.
